Doctor Mid-Nite is a superhero identity adopted by multiple characters in DC Comics. This biography focuses on the original version, Doctor Charles McNider.
Charles McNider first appeared in All-American Comics #25 (April 1941). He was a brilliant young surgeon who was blinded by an exploding grenade thrown through his operating room window by a gangster he was testifying against.
McNider discovered he could see perfectly in complete darkness. Exposure to daylight proved more problematic, but with the use of special infrared lenses, he gained functional sight. As Doctor Mid-Nite, he used his unique vision and medical skills to fight crime.
He used black out bombs that when activated, only he could see. He also used a variety of medical gadgets as weapons and was accompanied by an owl sidekick named Hooty.
